Tomorrow is the 39th Anniversary
of Black July that manifested in Colombo and spread to many other multicultural
areas of Sri Lanka. Wikipedia presents its origin as follows:
[On 23
July 1983 at around 11:30 pm, the rebel group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam
(LTTE; also known as the Tamil Tigers) ambushed the Four Four Bravo military patrol in Thirunelveli, near Jaffna in northern Sri Lanka. A roadside
bomb was detonated beneath a jeep that was leading the convoy, injuring at
least two soldiers on board. Soldiers traveling in the truck behind the jeep
then dismounted to help their fellow soldiers. Subsequently, they were ambushed
by a group of Tamil Tiger fighters who fired at them with automatic weapons and hurled grenades. In the ensuing clash, one officer and twelve soldiers were
killed, with two more fatally wounded, for a total of fifteen dead. A number of
the rebels were also killed. Kittu, a regional commander of the LTTE, would later admit to
planning and carrying out the ambush. This attack has been
described as retaliation for the killing of one of the LTTE's founding members, Charles
Anthony, by Sri Lankan forces and for the
alleged abduction and rape of Tamil school girls by government
forces]
The
above confirms that the Tamil Rebels dealt with the official forces summarily –
very like today’s ‘Go-home Gota’ protestors. Now, JVP – the equal other side of
LTTE is promising to rise against the government:
[National
People’s Power (NPP) Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayaka yesterday said the NPP is
ready to lead the most powerful uprising of people seen in Sri Lanka to herald
a complete political transformation.
“We are prepared to end corruption, suppression as
well as this ruinous political and economic systems along with the destructive
Rajapaksa political camp,” he said. “We will gather and organise the people to
ensure this end,” he added. ]
This
JVP leader, participated in the Parliament’s election of President just two days
ago and got only 3 votes. He then has the duty to Oppose corruption through
Parliamentary process.
Lay
persons opposing through protests have to confirm belief in self governance
through a pathway, independent to that of
the official titleholders in
Parliament. That is known through Prescriptive Rights protected by law in Sri
Lanka. It is parallel to indigenous rights to using land – confirmed through
Mabo decision by the High Court of Australia in 1992.
Belief
is exponential power and does not need proof of ownership. It is this belief
that renders minorities Equal status as majority in particular area. Majority
is relative and is junior to Absolute power of Belief. It is proven by Adverse Possession – known as ‘squatters rights’ here in Australia. Its parallel
in politics is the ‘protestors’ rights’. Gandhi is the king of such protestors.
Rebels
who wage armed war – are the opposition of the armed forces – provided both use
the same measure/law. The LTTE attack was against unlawful soldiers. Then they had
the right to take the position of the unlawful soldiers and not that of the
whole of the armed forces. Likewise, the JVP in South, and that too only until
it became part of the official parliament.
They
are like de facto partnerships. Those based on belief do not need the written
law. Others need the law to not interfere and abuse them. The parallel for protestors
is their right to peaceful assembly. That right was lost when properties of
politicians were damaged by the public through the pathway of protests.
In
1983, the actions of the LTTE were taken by the then President as enemy action.
Back then all Communists were seen as enemies by the UNP government. Hence he turned a blind eye to the unruly Sinhalese
mob who attacked not the LTTE but Tamil civilians in Colombo
and other multicultural parts of Sri Lanka. Tamils who were under the influence
of the LTTE, kept blaming the government.
Tamils to this day, have not owned LTTE’s role in the 1983 pogrom. This
eventually escalated to Nandhikadal end in 2009.
As per the Guardian article ‘Sri Lanka security forces
raid protest camp as Ranil Wickremesinghe flexes muscles’ at
[Sri Lankan security forces have raided
the main anti-government protest camp in Colombo, dismantling it and evicting
activists gathered outside the president’s office.
The raid in the capital
early on Friday came a day after veteran politician Ranil Wickremesinghe – who
vowed tough action against demonstrators – was sworn in as the crisis-hit
country’s new president, replacing Gotabaya Rajapaksa, whom protesters forced
to step down.]
As opposed to his uncle, J R
Jayawardene who was President in 1983, Ranil is taking firm action through the official
armed forces. All citizens who believe in the law, would support this. The power
of those who oppose this has to come from their belief in alternate government structure
that is Sri Lankan. This can only be Sinhala only or communism foremost.
Ultimately we live with the choices we make. That is the law of karma.
TNA’s Tamil MPs have so far opposed Mr Wickremesinghe in this issue. Had
they taken ownership of the breaches by the LTTE – they would have had insight
into JVP mind. By avoiding this, they have inherited the negative side of LTTE
karma – i.e. – killing Politicians.
This is an opportunity for
us to have closure so our heirs in Sri Lanka would live in harmony. If we keep
blaming the government without disciplining our side, we would avoid closure
and revenge would go into a loop – as is happening to Sinhalese. All because
LTTE copied JVP. Politicians become the first to be infected by such viruses
due to the ‘free’ environment of the Parliament.
